How Yarrow Became One of My Top Herbal Allies
Achillea millefolium, commonly known as yarrow, is an incredible herb that everyone can benefit from.
First of all, the stunning blossoms that bloom in midsummer are a striking white that stands out in a sea of green, making them easy to spot. The aerial parts, including the flower and leaf, are a classic first-aid remedy. Known for its “styptic” action, a poultice of fresh or dried yarrow can stop minor bleeds immediately.
Yarrow’s affinity for the blood extends to its ability to move stagnated blood, making it perfect for topical use on bruises or broken capillaries to restore flow. It’s also effective on hemorrhoids. I always have yarrow oil infusion on hand and make a few personal travel kit salves each year to take with me for first aid during hikes, car rides, and travel.
Taking a tea of yarrow internally assists with digestion (as a bitter) or acts as a diaphoretic (opening up blood vessels) to help break a fever.
Lastly, it is said that the energetic properties of yarrow are highly protective and boundary-building. A flower essence of yarrow may help protect your own energy and prevent energy drainage for those who are empathetic or work in high-stress, high-energy environments. Yarrow is even planted around houses to protect against fire damage, and recent accounts from the California wildfires have confirmed yarrow’s protective power. A tincture of yarrow can be sprayed to prevent tick and mosquito bites. I use a yarrow tincture + catnip combination when I’m out in the woods, and it works every time—again, boundaries and protection. 🪞🧱✋
All said, I love yarrow. It’s one of my top three plant allies. When I worked in the hospital, I would spray the ROMI Rose and Yarrow Toner on myself (in the bathroom) before seeing a particularly difficult patient or whenever I was feeling vulnerable. I can say it helped me feel, at the very least, fortified and supported.
Yarrow is a key component in our Rose and Yarrow Toner, Earthly Cleansing Oil, and Restore Rerum. Its topical effects on the skin are phenomenal—antibacterial, tonifying, skin-healing, and restorative for blood flow.
