Inspired by growing up in Honolulu, Hawai’i, ma’ema’e means “to cleanse” in Hawaiian. This triple-filtered, fine-particle polish was formulated to gently exfoliate and refine the texture of your skin without stripping away your skin’s natural protective barrier. When you notice that your oil serums are not absorbing as effectively or perhaps your skin is a bit rough in some areas, it’s time to exfoliate! Physically exfoliating dead skin with a nutritive and cleansing combination of herbs, oat powders, and clay can reveal a glowing complexion and allow for better absorbency of toners and oils through the epidermis.
As of October 2025, our polish was newly reformulated with additional oils and emulsifers to create a consistency that is easier to apply, less messy to use, and provides a nice “slip” when massaging onto the skin. The particle size of the herbs still maintain an ultra-fine mill which allows for an effective exfoliating action without being abrasive. What results is a skin finish that feels lusciously smooth, soft, and thinly moisturized – perfect for refining the canvas of your face for skincare, makeup, and facing the world!

No more are the days of scratchy, rough exfoliants with this elegant formula that never feels abrasive and is super gentle for people with sensitive skin (confirmed by a test group of our loyal customers). Joyously tactile, this polish is a vibrant partner in revealing smooth, fresh, and soft skin in just one application. Used consistently over time, you will start to notice refined pore texture, uniformity, and brighter color of your skin.
Raw, small-apiary cultivated honey, Japanese shiso (perilla) seed, and castor oil add a sumptuous spreadability and emollience to this polish when added to the skin with a generous, dripping dose of water or plant hydrosols. Freshly harvested moringa leaf from the Big Island of Hawai’i, Pacific Ocean spirulina, hibiscus flower, and shade-grown matcha reflect the flavors, culture, and Aloha of the Hawaiian islands while providing a high amount of phytonutrients like B vitamins, beta-carotene, amino acids, and vitamin K. Combined with kaolin clay, finely milled lavender, oat, rose, and rice bran, the effect is even more pore cleansing, detoxifying, and smoothing.
How does it smell?
Fairly neutral, clay, mineral, traces of Ocean vegetation, a subtle floral note from whole lavender and rose petals that are finely-milled in-house.
Cleanse the skin first so that it is free of make-up and daily build-up. We like to use ROMI Apothecary’s Earthly Cleansing oil. Then make sure your skin is wet thoroughly with water or one of our hydrosol products so that water is dripping off your face. Our new Lunaire and Solaire hydrosols are perfect to use here.
Apply 1 teaspoon of polish, divided across each quadrant of the face. Additionally spritz 3-5 pumps of hydrosol or water to thin the consistency of the product, so it moves like a syrup. Gently massage the polish with fingertips over your skin for 2-3 minutes, using small circular motions and concentrate on areas of congestion. Add more water/toner as needed. Avoid the eyes! You can let the product sit on your face as a quick mask but do not let it dry or start to tighten. Rinse off with lukewarm water. Use a damp soft cloth for easier removal or rinse off in the shower.Additional information
